The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted drier and warmer conditions for the Southern part of the United States and cool and wetter conditions for the Pacific Northwest and upper midwest. Southern Utah is expected to have drier weather and below-normal precipitation.

The Farmer’s Almanac predicts that snowfall will be near normal, with the snowiest periods in early and late December, late January, and late February. Winter temperatures and precipitation will be slightly below normal, on average.

Protecting roofs from the snow is one of the biggest challenges in winter. In this article, we will discuss how you can protect your rooftop from any damages.

4 Ways To Protect Your Roof This Winter In Utah

1- Check for Ice Dams

When you add insulation to your attic, the roof warms up, and the snow starts to melt. When it reaches the edges, it refreezes as the edges are not warm. The frozen edges do not allow the melted snow to slide down the roof, and the melted snow keeps collecting on your roof. These are called ice dams, and they can be very damaging to homes.

2- Use the best ice-melt

Using rock salt is one of the most popular ways of clearing snow from the rooftop, but it isn’t the best ice melt. The reason being, sodium chloride contains corrosive oxidizing agents that are suited for removing ice, but it also damages shingles, nails, and other fittings. This, in turn, can adversely affect your rooftop and make it weak.

And so you need an environmentally friendly ice melt that is salt-free, chloride free, acetate free and does not contain any toxins. This will ensure that your rooftop is safe. Several products in the market are comprised of traction agents that can prevent falls and any slips. One such product is Safe paw. It has a modified crystal compound that has a dual effect when used. It melts the ice and also provides adequate protection for your roof for over three days. It also contains a special mixture of glycol. Safe Paw is also salt-free, and safety of use is guaranteed.

3- Use other tools

Apart from using an environmentally friendly ice melt, you’ll need the right tools also. A long-handled rake can help you remove snow from the roof. Also, don’t use metal shovels that can damage the rooftop. Instead, use plastic shovels.

4- Inspect your roof

Inspect your roof for loose shingles and tree branches that could catch on the roof rake. To clear the snow, start from the edge of the roof and then work your way in. Be sure to leave several inches of snow to avoid scraping the shingles and damaging the roof.  Use roof fall harnesses and all the gears that can help you stay safe while doing it.

This winter, make sure to protect your rooftop from potential ice melt damage and use the best ice melt that is pet safe, children safe, and environmentally friendly ice melt.
