Safe Paw Pet Safe Ice Melt

Deducing from the past trends, it has been found that Colorado gets a drier than normal winter in the La Nina years. But according to Farmer’s Almanac, Colorado will get more than enough snow this winter. It is predicting ‘normal to below-normal temperatures on the Central Plains and the Rockies.’ The Almanac also predicts above-normal snowfall in the northern areas of Colorado.

We Coloradans love snow, but it’s always a challenge to keep driveways and sidewalks free from ice build-up without damaging it.

Safe Ice Melt For Pets

Safe Paw Ice Melter Safe For Dogs

Safe Paw

The Original and the #1 Pet and Child Safe Ice Melt for over 20 years. Guaranteed environmentally safe – will not harm waterways and sensitive wetlands.

So, last year, I came back to this beautiful city after 11 long years. And this time with a little furball. It was its first winter in such a cold city, so we wanted to make sure that we choose the right ice melt and have no issues.

I did a lot of research on the internet before settling on this 8lb shaker of ice melt. I read many reviews, graded the ice melt on every parameter, and experimented with it first before using it. And in this post, I’m going to share the result of every experiment that I conducted so that you can yourself see and decide whether you should buy this product or not.

Works At All Temperatures –

So, I know most ice melt products don’t work when the temperature is the below-freezing point.

I’ve used it here and there on both negative temperatures and warmer temperatures (closer to 30f), and have noticed that it has worked successfully in melting the ice in both scenarios.

I’ll also tell you why other ice melt don’t work at below-freezing temperature. The fact is most of them have rock salt in their blend, which does not work below 20 degrees. And those that work contain hazardous chemicals like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride etc.

Dog’s Paws Are Safe –

Before trying Safe paw, I had tried a couple of other ice melt that claimed themselves to be pet-safe, but they were causing skin irritation. So, I tried this product also on a small patch first. When it went well, I used it for our front porch and walking paths to where we take the dogs “to go”. No issues with our dog’s paws, no vomiting, no diarrhea, nothing.

So, I researched this as well- why other pet-safe ice melt caused skin irritation and why Safe Paw didn’t I found that even these so-called pet-safe ice melt have chemicals in their blend. Almost all ice melts have ingredients like sodium chloride (rock salt), potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, and sometimes urea. All these chemicals are harmful to pets one way or the other. Safe Paw, on the other hand, is completely free from salt and chlorine. Therefore, it is an ice melt safe for pets and concrete.

Safe On Concrete –

When we tried it on a small patch we checked its impact on the concrete. It was fine. Not it has been a year of using Safe Paw our concrete is still safe. For me, it’s the best ice melt for concrete. We keep this product by the downstairs door within arm’s reach, and it’s our go-to product for any time it looks like it may get super cold or snows to prevent ice from forming!
