My Pet Safe Ice Melt Solutions During Heavy Snowfall This Winter In Pennsylvania

The 2020 Winter Outlook released by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that Pennsylvania has equal chances of a drier than average and a wetter than average winter. However, a portion of northwestern Pennsylvania has a 33 to 40 percent chance of a wetter than average winter.

Two years back we were using the traditional ice melt on the driveway and steps. We thought that dealing with clumps, staining of the driveway, and skin irritation for us and our pet was a side effect that everyone deals with. Snow Melt That Works At Low Temperatures –

Did you know rock salt doesn’t work at temperatures below 20 degrees? And on the other extreme are ice melt which claims to be effective at -40 degrees. But not many people know that such ice melt use chemicals like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride which are dangerous. It can burn your pet’s paws and spoil your concrete.

Some Of The Harmful Chemicals They Contain Are –

1. Magnesium Chloride –

The Material Safety Data Sheet for magnesium chloride lists many harmful effects including:

• Eye irritation and burn from contact
• Skin irritation and burn (including in the mouth and throat) when touched or ingested
• Gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea when ingested
• Respiratory irritation when MgCl2 dust is inhaled
• Metal fume fever, when inhaled or ingested that causes flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, cough, weakness, chest and muscle pain, and increased white blood cell count

2. Potassium Chloride –

Another common chemical used in ice melt is potassium chloride. Potassium chloride is a severe irritant and can cause gastrointestinal irritation to the point of hemorrhagic vomiting or diarrhea.

3. Rock salt –

Mild ingestion of rock salt can lead to vomiting and diarrhea etc. Dogs eating large amounts of this type of ice melt can develop hypernatremia with central nervous system signs (like dehydration, tachycardia, tachypnea, hyperthermia, and death).

After trying almost every chemical-based ice melt, I was lucky to find Safe Paw that didn’t cause any skin or eye irritation.
