Winter is approaching fast. Soon it’s going to be white and beautiful all around. It’s such an enjoyable feeling to watch your dog play in the snow- jumping, digging, and frolicking. However, for many, winter is a season of bitter cold, numbing wetness, and anxiety around pet illnesses in winter. Colder temperatures, frozen snow, and chilling winds can be dangerous for pets.

If you’re a new pet parent or simply looking for the best ways to protect your four-footed family member from the winter pet injuries, then you’ve landed in the right place. In this article, we will talk about how you can keep your pets safe this winter in 3 simple steps-

Step-1 Keep Them Inside

Cold weather outside– Pets are extremely sensitive to wind chills, even if the temperature is above the freezing point. They can get hypothermia and frostbite – the common winter dog injuries during winters.

Hypothermia is a condition when the body temperature falls considerably. Its symptoms are- paleness of skin, shivering, and listlessness to the point of lethargy.

Dogs and cats can also suffer from frostbites on delicate body parts like earflaps, tail tip, and in between the toes.

Sharp-edged ice and chemical-based ice melts outside– The sharp edges of ice particles outside and the chemical-based ice melts can cause winter paw injuries in pets. Burning sensation, cracks, and cut on the paw pad and broken nails are common consequences.

Therefore, it is advisable to keep them inside. Pets should not be left outside in freezing temperatures for more than 30 minutes.

Step 2- Use Pet-Safe Ice Melt

Choosing the right ice melt can help you avoid most of the pet illnesses in winter. Almost all ice melts in the market contain salt and are not safe to use. Apart from rock salt, many brands use magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, or potassium chloride. These chloride-based products are not pet-friendly and may cause problems like skin irritation, eyes, nose and lung burning, and even nausea, diarrhea, and dehydration if ingested.

Some companies round off the sharp edges of the salt and call their ice melt pet friendly. The so-called ‘pet safe’ ice melt may not be sharp on your pet’s paw but can cause serious winter pet emergencies due to their toxic nature.

Therefore, carefully choose an ice melt that is-

100% pet-safe that will not burn their paws or poison the pet if ingested.

salt-free, chlorine-free, and acetate-free formula and completely safe for pets, kids, and the environment.

Step-3 Taking Extra Care

In these chilling and freezing times, our pets need some extra care.

  • Clip the extra hair on the bottom of your dog’s feet before the snowfall.
  • Wash their feet with warm water after the walk and dry their hair using a towel or blow-dry.
  • Bundle up your dog with insulated sweaters and jackets
  • Get them used to booties. Booties can prevent their paws from getting burnt and cut due to the salt-based ice melt on the street and in the neighborhood.
