5 Easy Ways to Prepare your Driveway This Winter
1. Check Cracks –
It’s a good idea to look for cracks before the first snowfall. Check all the cracks, broken tiles, seepages, etc.
2. Seal The Deal –
Any cracks in the driveway should be sealed with a good sealant. The thing is, cracks may widen and get even worse when it snows.
When the ice melt works on the snow and melts it, it seeps in the concrete of your driveway through the hole and cracks. And when the temperature falls, the seeped-in water refreezes.
The frozen water exerts pressure and expands the crevices and the holes, making it bigger. So it is advised to seal the cracks in your driveway before the snow can cause any more damages.
3. Use A Good Ice Melter For The Driveway –
The type of ice melt you use on your driveway makes a big difference. Rock salt or chemical-based ice melt is often used to melt the ice. Rock salt is sodium chloride. Most of the ice melt are also composed of chloride in one form or the other. Although these are easily available options, they are not the best ice melters for the driveway. The reality is chlorine reacts with the metal rebar in your driveway and causes corrosion.
Instead, use a good ice melt on the driveway, the one that is free of salt, chlorine, and acetate and isn’t harmful to the environment, pets, and children.

4. Add Traction –
Apart from using a good ice melt on the driveway, you can also prepare your driveway by adding traction. A traction agent adds friction to the surface immediately so that you can cross the slippery layer of ice without the fear of fall. An alternative to this is to use gravel and sand to make the snow less slippery.
5. Level The Ground-
If there are any sunken depressions on your driveway, they can cause water pooling when the snow melts. These sunken depressions should be repaired before the snow hits the floor (maybe while checking cracks). Any depressions left untreated can cause slick patches on your driveway if your driveway.
