What type of ice melt should I choose?

Choose according to pavement temperature, surface condition, pet exposure, environmental considerations, and whether your primary goal is melting ice or improving traction. Different deicers have different performance and exposure characteristics. ( fhwa.dot.gov )

What ice melt should I use around dogs?

Review the actual ingredients and application instructions rather than relying only on a “pet safe” label. Sodium chloride can irritate paws, while calcium, magnesium, and potassium chlorides can cause gastrointestinal irritation if swallowed. Cleaning paws after walks can reduce ingestion through grooming. ( aspca.org )

Does Safe Paw contain chlorides?

The current Safe Paw FAQ describes Safe Paw as a chloride-free ice melt . Product-specific application instructions should still be followed. ( safepaw.com )

Can I use ice melt on new concrete?

The Safe Paw FAQ recommends avoiding ice-melt application on concrete less than 12 months old. For recently poured concrete, it recommends mechanical snow removal or traction approaches instead. ( safepaw.com )

What can I use on concrete less than one year old?

For new concrete, prioritize mechanical snow removal and traction rather than deicing. The current Safe Paw FAQ specifically mentions Walk On Ice or sand as temporary traction approaches. ( safepaw.com )

Is traction the same as ice melt?

No. Ice melt is intended to lower the freezing point of water and weaken or prevent ice bonding. Traction materials primarily increase surface grip without necessarily melting the underlying ice. FHWA distinguishes deicing from other winter surface-management approaches. ( fhwa.dot.gov )
