In this afternoon’s change, we upgraded the WTA to a warning and honed in on the area of highest impact (snowfall totals in excess of 4 inches combined with strong winds). Because of the upgrade, we are advising individuals and businesses to take preparatory action in advance of the onset of the snow event which commences on Friday. The main risk to the forecast would be minor north/south shifting of this zone.
A winter storm will rapidly move from the Northern Rockies (Montana) to the Midwest (Nebraska and Missouri) across the Ohio Valley and finally to the Mid-Atlantic over the upcoming Holiday weekend. Snow and strong winds will disrupt transportation in this M to M (Montana to Maryland) swath.
This storm will mainly be a snow producer with most areas in the WTA zone receiving 3-8 inches with isolated locations getting up to 12 inches. Strong winds will increase the impacts of the storm as there is substantial blowing and drifting producing low visibility.
Impacted Major Highways within the risk zone:
Major interstates within the risk zone that will experience moderate to major impact include: I-15, I-94, I-90, I-80, I-70, I-35, I-55, and I-57. Major traffic delays can be expected within the zone with heightened risk of road closures in areas of highest snow totals.
Business Operations, Loading/Unloading Freight, and Intermodal Ramp Operations:
Loading/unloading of freight and intermodal ramp operations are likely to be disrupted in the impacted areas.
Great Falls, MT, BIllings, MT, Rapid City, SD, Omaha, NE, Lincoln, NE, Kansas City, MO, Des Moines, IA, St. Louis, MO
Minor power outages in rural locations are likely where winds are strongest.
Snow will increase stress on livestock within the zone and hamper transportation/movement of animals.
This Watchtower Alert will be updated as new forecast information becomes available.
